Beyond Dimensions

A three-year-old boy screams at the man

who grips him, who jerks him to the gate.

So desperate and pulsing, surely not

 

the scream for chocolate or trinkets.

The man ignores him, and follows another

so encumbered, that child plodding,

 

eyes forward, all despair.

No mother interrupts with a sweet

or a slap. They are bound for

 

L.A., and the screaming boy

carried up the gangway,

goes limp. Drugged?

 

My every misconception’s alert,

my mothering alive with fear.

Is it blinders the saleswoman

 


inside the sunglass hut wears

lost in talk and her cup of cofee?

Only she can do something,

 

or so I say to the woman seated

beside me, speaking through Siri,

pointing our phones at each other.

 

Our exit’s so little exotic, just the tail

of our plane the purple and green

of a hawk that people onboard never hear.

perdida en la plática y en su taza de café?
Solo ella puede hacer algo

digo así a la mujer sentada
a mi lado, usando Siri,
con nuestros teléfonos encontrados.

Un tanto exótica es nuestra partida. En la cola

del avión, el púrpura y verde

de un halcón a quien los pasajeros nunca oirán.
